Little Day tests Little J with the Port Talbot Magnet

Little J is a platform that allows you to become the reporter and work alongside your hyperlocal news team to create the stories that matter to you.

All over the country local newspapers are closing and communities are struggling to communicate the concerns and interests of their residents. This project tackles the problem of how to create a sustainable digital model for collecting local news content. Exploring trust, reputation and motivation, creative agency Behaviour and Justin Lewis of the Cardiff School of Journalism, will use behavioural psychology to explore how to inspire local people to become citizen journalists.

Whether you’re tired of dog mess on your streets, want to review your local restaurant or have witnessed an incident that needs reporting Little J is a quick way to get your community in the know.

When the local papers closed in Port Talbot a co-operative of seven journalists got together and set up the Port Talbot Magnet, an online news site for the local community. They kindly let us use them as our guinea pigs when beta testing Little J on the public, we set up a pop up newsroom in Aberafan shopping centre in the town and called it Little Day.

We learned a lot from the experiment and were amazed at the enthusiasm of the residents in Port Talbot all keen to help share news and views on their community.

After the initial testing of Little J with the welcoming people people of Port Talbot we’re now tinkering under the hood to plug-in all the feedback.

Little J is a research and development project funded through REACT and the Arts and Humanities Research Council investigating the future of print. The project is jointly run by Cardiff University’s Centre for Community Journalism and the psychological creative agency Behaviour.
