Cardiff University Staff and Students
If you work or study at Cardiff University, there are lots of ways to get involved with community journalism. You can join an editorial team, contribute stories or simply read and engage with local community news services.
We support and train several community news services in the South Wales area:
- Pobl Caerdydd – the capital’s first Welsh language digital news service. Focusing on cultural happenings, the website, Twitter and Facebook channels keep Cardiff dwellers updated on everything from rugby matches to musicals, all through the medium of Welsh. If you would like to volunteer, email the team to find out more.
- Rhondda People – set up by a group of local people (including a teacher, shopkeeper and Cardiff University student), the website aims to shine a spotlight on the great things to see and do in the Rhondda. Join the conversation through Twitter or Facebook, and email the team to find out more.
- Port Talbot Magnet – following the closure of the Port Talbot Guardian in 2009, a group of former journalists came together to establish the Port Talbot Magnet to fill an urgent news gap. Since then, the Port Talbot Magnet has launched a website, print edition, as well as lively Twitter and Facebook channels. Covering important local issues as well as community events and campaigns, the Magnet has become an authoritative voice for Port Talbot. Get in touch with the team for more information.
- Grangetown Cardiff – alongside fellow Engagement Project, Community Gateway, this Autumn we will begin working with the team at Grangetown Community Action, who produce a community newsletter, website, Twitter and Facebook channels. With a strong community-led ethos and support for local events and businesses, we look forward to seeing how this service develops. Email the team to find out more.
